No Holiday Breaks for SEP

At the
start of the 2015-16 school year, no holiday breaks will be given to the
students and faculty of the Southeast Polk district. At a recent school board
meeting, members came to the agreement that all breaks should be terminated due
to students’ inability to learn effectively and return to a normal school
schedule after a long weekend or week-long plus break.
“I
think that this decision is in the best interest for students to learn to the
best of their ability year-round and not have the distraction of a break to get
in the way of their learning,” said board member Brad Pitt.
Many
teachers are in agreement with the school board.
“I have
been waiting years for breaks to go away. They are a waste of time for
everybody. Why would students want to be sitting at home bored over break when
they could be learning more information in their classes?” said English teacher
Vin Diesel.
Though
board members and teachers think it is a good idea, students disagree.
“Breaks
are the only things that give me motivation to go to school. Without them, I am
going to be locked away in the school
five days a week for the entirety of the academic year,” said sophomore Melissa
McCarthy.
