As of April 1, 2015, The Southeast Polk school board has established a ban on wearing yoga pants or leggings during school hours.
“The only time I can see pants like these deemed appropriate is during school sports like cross country and dance team,” said Principal Aidon Know.
The spandex apparel ban follows under the non-discrimination policy stating “The Southeast Polk Community School District does not discriminate based on race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, physical attributes, physical or mental ability or disability, ancestry, political party preference, military affiliation, socioeconomic status or familial status.”
The physical attributes section is revealed in yoga pants by how tight the clothing articles are to a person’s body exposing their natural body shape. By exposing their natural body shapes, the male population can be distracted and impulse into making snide comments that can be classified as sexual harassment.
“By banning spandex apparel during school hours, we can eliminate the distraction, sexual impulses, and the overall look of our school by this one simple fix,” said Know.
Students, Tiffany Blue and Funny Bunny both feel as though banning yoga pants will cause more problems than fix any problems that weren’t already here in the first place.
“I don’t even like own a pair of jeans, I wear leggings every day and that’s how I express myself, or my laziness, whatever,” said Blue.
